How much depth does a double curtain setup need, and does the heading style change it?

Allow at least 180mm of depth for a double curtain setup. Inside a bulkhead or recess that's the clearance you need; face-fitted, the curtains project about the same distance from the wall.

Double curtains run two tracks one behind the other, so the depth is set by the gap between them plus the curtain itself.

Depending on how you mount them

  • Inside a recess or bulkhead: make sure there's at least 180mm of usable depth so both layers clear the opening.
  • Face-fitted to the wall: the brackets hold the tracks off the wall, so the curtains protrude a similar 180mm.
  • Ceiling-mounted outside a recess: track spacing is more forgiving here, and we usually recommend 180mm to 200mm between the two tracks.

Tip: If you're tight on recess depth, a face fit or ceiling mount outside the recess gives you more room to work with.
