Traditional vs Day/Night: Which shutter is best for your home?

At Curtain and Blind Co., we offer two types of interior fitted shutter: traditional Eco and Day/Night. While both look similar and offer features like split tilts and Midrails, the key difference lies in how effectively they control light and privacy.

Eco Shutters

Eco shutters combine a timeless plantation design with durable PVC construction, adjustable louvre blades (for controlling light and airflow), and an aluminium core - making them ideal for Australian conditions.

Key benefits:

• Clean, modern architectural finish

• Highly durable and moisture-resistant

• Good airflow and insulation

• Flexible configurations via split tilt and Midrails

Eco shutters are perfect for living areas, kitchens, and open-plan spaces where natural light is a priority. However, as the louvre blades don’t fully seal, small gaps remain between them, resulting in a soft, diffused light rather than full blockout.

Day/Night Shutters

Day/Night shutters are a premium evolution of the classic Eco shutter. They feature a specialised interlocking louvre system that fits tightly together when closed. This provides greatly improved light blocking performance without significantly changing the overall shutter aesthetic.

Key benefits:

• Significantly less light bleed between blades

• Increased privacy (especially at night)

• Improved insulation against heat and glare

• Flexibility to move between soft natural light to near blockout

Day/Night shutters are therefore better suited to bedrooms or media rooms, where the practical benefits of enhanced light blockout and added privacy are especially important.

DIY Curtains: Can You Install Sheers Yourself?

Absolutely — and it's easier than most people think. If you can handle a cordless drill, you can install sheer curtains yourself. Modern DIY curtain systems come with everything you need: the track, brackets, screws, hand wands, and clear installation guides.
The key is getting your measurements right before you order. Measure your window width and drop in three places (left, centre, right) and use the smallest measurement. This accounts for any unevenness in your ceiling or window frame and ensures a clean, professional fit.
For S-fold sheers — the most popular heading style for that contemporary, wave-like drape — a designer aluminium track is included, and installation is straightforward whether you're face-fixing to the wall above the window or top-fixing directly to the ceiling for a dramatic floor-to-ceiling look.
