How to measure for bay window curtains

If you have a bay window, measuring for curtains can be more complex than it is for a flat window. This being the case, we recommend reviewing the below guide and then contacting us for any further advice before proceeding.

When doing this, it is very helpful to receive a photograph of the bay window with lots of surrounding space visible, so we can fully assess the area. Something like this illustrated example:

Individual or continuous?

While considering bay window curtains, there is an important choice to make early in the process - whether to have individual curtains for each window or a single curtain across all three windows.

Individual curtains are fitted on separate tracks and can be useful if you want to operate each curtain independently of the other.

A single curtain with a centre opening stack can be achieved using a continuous track including two corner curve sections.

In most instances either option is possible, but both require that the corner angles between the left and right windows are set at 135 degrees. If they are not, the width adjustments we make as standard will skew the outcomes, leading to a sub-optimal fit.

Check your angles

It is likely the angles between each window are set at 135 degrees. However, it is essential to double check this is the case before proceeding. We have a super simple method for checking the angles, click here for details.

Measuring & Ordering

Once you have checked your bay window angles and decided on your curtain style (individual or continuous), you can get to measuring and ordering.

Individual

Each curtain for each window (left, middle, right) should be ordered individually - as per this reference image:

Measure for each window (left, middle, right) just as you would for any new curtain, following our measuring guide.

When placing each curtain order, please use a Room Name that makes it clear the curtain is part of bay window configuration i.e. Bay Left, Bay Middle, Bay Right and mention this in your order notes.

After the order is placed, we will make slight adjustments to the track widths to ensure they meet neatly.

Continuous

To place an order for a continuous bay window curtain, you will need to order two separate curtains, one for each side that will open from the centre of the middle window.

For the Left Curtain, measure from the outer left end to the centre of the middle window. Then do the same for the Right Curtain.

When ordering each curtain, select a 'corner curve' position during customisation. Once 'corner curve' has been selected, you will need to enter the relevant left and right wall measurements - as per this reference image:

Be sure to mention in the order notes for each curtain that it is for a bay window.

Please note that our website does not currently offer an option to order a continuous bay window curtain with a single stack (left, right or free hanging).
