How to measure for Roman Blinds

Before diving into the guide, gather your tools: a metal tape measure, a pencil and some paper for jotting down measurements, and if needed, a sturdy step ladder for reaching higher areas.

There are also a few key considerations about Roman blind manufacturing that you may find useful to know about first. For example, our Roman blinds are only supplied for face fitting. This is primarily for aesthetic purposes but also helps ensure smooth operation, which can otherwise become impaired when recess fitted.

We recommend clicking on all of the following considerations before continuing on to the measuring guide.

Things to consider before starting...

Why can't I recess fit Roman blinds?
Through experience, we have found that fitting Roman blinds in a recess is often problematic. We want all our customers to be happy with their purchases, so we provide the best options to help maximise a product’s value and longevity.
How do I care for my Roman blinds?
If you spill something on or mark your Roman blinds, you will need to quickly spot clean the area concerned. Use a clean cloth and mild detergent in warm water to clean the affected area. It is best to dab the area rather than rubbing. Please avoid using harsh scouring pads and chemicals on the fabric.
What customisation options are available for Roman blinds?
Our Roman blinds come in a wide range of colours and the choice of blockout, light filtering or sunscreen fabrics. We also offer a chain or cord control options. An extra piece of fabric covers the headrail on our cord control Roman blinds.

Measuring your window

Face fitting is where the blind sits outside the window frame recess (essentially covering the frame itself). It’s important to note the measurements for the width of a face-fitting blind will be from bracket-to-bracket.

1. Measure the width

To measure for face fitting blinds, measure the outside width of the window, recording the exact width you want your blind manufactured. For frameless windows, we suggest extending about 50mm past the recess edges on each side (as per the visual below).

Please note: For windows with architraves, we recommend measuring to the outer edge of the frame on each side.

2. Measure the drop

Next measure the outside height of the window frame, starting from the point at which you’d like your blind to sit above the window, down to the point at which you’d like your blind to finish.

Please note: We recommend the top of the blind starts approximately 50mm above the window.
