How to measure your architrave for shutters

How do you measure up your architrave for shutters?

Correct measuring is the key to easy, hassle-free installation. So, it’s worth taking the time to get it right.

There are two kinds of standard fit for shutters – face or recess fit. In this guide, we’ll be looking specifically at face fitted shutters (sometimes known as ‘outside mounted’ shutters). Face fit is where a shutter will be mounted on the wall or architrave surrounding the window, therefore covering the total window area (glass and frame). This is often preferred in larger spaces and/or when maximum light blockout effectiveness is desirable.

To accurately measure for shutters, you’ll need a metal tape measure, pencil, paper, and if required, a sturdy step ladder to get to high places. When starting your measuring, first make sure the window is clear. Look to see if there are any obstructions in the way that could impair your measuring or slat movement – like handles or other frame elements.

All clear? Great! Now, measure the outside width from the outer left edge to the outer right edge of the window’s architrave. Measure three times – top, middle and bottom and record the widest measurement (in millimetres) to use for your order. This helps ensure that your louvres will move freely within the window space after the shutter is face fitted.

Next, measure the outside height (or drop) of the window’s architrave in three places – left, middle and right. Again, use the largest measurement for your order and record it in millimetres.

Need a Midrail?

A midrail allows you to open the louvres above and below the midrail independently of each other. This is very helpful for balancing your light and privacy needs. If your window is 1800mm tall (or more), your shutter must be supplied with a midrail installed to ensure the structural integrity is maintained.

To achieve pleasing aesthetic symmetry, we recommend the position of the midrail mirrors any existing features of your window, such as a frame sash dividing two glass panes. To measure for a midrail, take a measurement from the bottom of your window to the middle of the point of where you would like midrail to be positioned.

Placing your order

Once you’ve recorded your measurements head to the shutter product page and in the ‘Customise & Order’ area enter your measurements and make your customisation choices. Once we have your completed order, we’ll check it over and get in touch if we want to confirm anything before sending it on for manufacturing.

If you’re in anyway unsure of how to proceed with measuring, please get in touch with our team by phone or email and we’ll be happy to provide specific advice.
